Clemency restores Mabilog’s eligibility to run for public office anew

Former Iloilo City mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog restored his eligibility to run for public office after President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. granted him executive clemency on Monday, Malacañang confirmed.

In a text message to reporters, Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin said that the clemency was granted “in connection with his administrative case, thereby removing the penalties or disabilities resulting from such case.” Under Mabilog’s leadership, Iloilo City earned several awards, Bersamin noted.

The clemency specifically addresses an administrative case involving Mabilog, which resulted in his dismissal in 2017 for serious dishonesty related to unexplained wealth of P8.9 million from 2012 to 2013. The Office of the Ombudsman dismissed Mabilog from office that year.

Though the executive clemency clears Mabilog of penalties related to his previous administrative case, he still faces graft charges, filed against him in 2023 by the Ombudsman. The charges, which stem from his alleged involvement in a questionable government contract for a towing service, are currently pending before the Sandiganbayan.

Despite these charges, the clemency allows Mabilog to seek public office again, Bersamin said.
