The City Government of Manila has announced the suspension of classes and work in local government offices on Friday, January 9, 2026, in observance of the Feast of the Black Nazarene, one of the country’s most significant religious events.
Under Executive Order No. 1, Series of 2026, issued by Francisco Isko Moreno Domagoso, classes at all levels—both public and private—are suspended, regardless of whether they are conducted online or face-to-face. The order likewise covers work in all local government offices within the City of Manila, allowing residents and government employees to safely participate in religious activities and easing mobility concerns during the annual observance.
Despite the general suspension, the city government emphasized that essential frontline services will continue to operate throughout the day. Offices and units responsible for peace and order, public safety, traffic management, disaster risk reduction and management, and health services will remain fully functional to ensure public welfare, crowd control, and emergency readiness amid the expected influx of devotees.
The advisory further clarified that the suspension of work in national government offices and private companies located in Manila will be subject to the discretion of their respective heads and management. Employers are encouraged to assess operational requirements while taking into consideration public safety, traffic conditions, and the scale of religious activities associated with the feast.
The Feast of the Black Nazarene, centered in Quiapo, traditionally draws millions of devotees and results in major road closures and heightened security measures across large sections of the city. City officials said the suspension aims to promote public safety, manage congestion, and show respect for the deeply rooted religious tradition observed annually by Filipinos.
