Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have been recognized as the backbone of Philippine economy because they play  a crucial role in sustaining growth and development across the country. At the same time, SMEs are considered as key drivers of growth, generating employment opportunities for millions of Filipinos.

From small retail shops, like the traditional sari-sari store, and local manufacturers that service providers and startups, these businesses help reduce unemployment and improve the standard of living in both urban and rural areas.

And unlike large corporations that are often concentrated in major cities, SMEs are spread throughout the country, allowing economic benefits to reach communities outside the National Capital Region and in the most remote areas of the archipelago.Based on data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), the Calabarzon region, composed of the provinces of Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon, is the country’s leading economic performer after recording 7.6-percent growth in gross regional domestic product (GRDP).

The region’s thriving SME sector stands as a significant force behind its resilience, growth and continued economic momentum. This milestone achievement reflects the region’s vital role in supporting the country’s economic recovery and long-term development, driven by sustained and dynamic activity across key industries and sectors that include manufacturing, services, trade and other productive enterprises.

However, people may wonder how Calabarzon was able to achieve a substantial increase in GRDP. The truth is it did not happen overnight or by chance—it’s outstanding growth resulted from strong coordination and strategic initiatives led by the region’s local government units (LGUs).

Through proactive leadership, LGUs in Calabarzon introduced and implemented various programs all aimed at strengthening local industries, supporting small and medium enterprises, attracting investments and improving infrastructure.

These progam’s and policies helped create more jobs, boost productivity and enhance the overall business environment across the region. In addition, a collaboration between the government, private sector and local communities played a crucial role in sustaining economic momentum.

By focusing on inclusive development, innovation and accessibility, Calabarzon has been able to extend economic opportunities not only to major cities but also to developing areas.
