The Bicol region collected more trash during this year’s International Coastal Cleanup Day compared to 2024, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Bicol (DENR-5) reported Monday.
Regional Executive Director Francisco Milla Jr. said around 9,027 kilograms of garbage were collected this year, up from 8,180 kilograms last year.
“Let us sustain this momentum by practicing proper waste management and supporting initiatives that safeguard our seas. Our goal is not only to clean today but to prevent waste from polluting our oceans tomorrow,” Milla said.
Collected wastes included grocery bags, bottles, cans, cigarette butts, straws, styrofoam, fishing nets, diapers, slippers, tires, clothing, and even e-cigarettes and toy plushies.
In Camarines Norte, 2,206 kg of solid waste were gathered from sites in Talisay, Daet, and Mercedes. Legazpi City volunteers collected 1,644.48 kg, while Catanduanes participants picked up 1,158 kg and Sorsogon volunteers 1,610.71 kg.
Camarines Sur cleanup drives gathered nearly 750 kg from several barangays, while Albay recorded 232 kg of waste.
