Basyang nears Central Visayas, threatens renewed landfall

Map showing the track and intensity forecast for Tropical Storm Basyang (Penha) as of February 6, 2026, including storm paths and wind speeds.

Expected trajectory of Tropical Storm Basyang as per the 8 a.m. bulletin of Pagasa (Feb. 6, 2026).

Tropical Storm Basyang is moving west-northwest and may pass close to or make landfall over Bohol, southern Cebu, and southern Negros Oriental on Friday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said.

As of its 8 a.m. bulletin, the storm was located over the coastal waters of Malimono, Surigao del Norte, with maximum sustained winds of 65 kph near the center and gusts of up to 90 kph.

Basyang is moving at around 20 kph and is expected to traverse the Central Visayas while maintaining tropical storm strength before weakening into a tropical depression Friday night or Saturday morning. It may further weaken into a low-pressure area by Sunday.

The state weather bureau said the storm is forecast to pass near the Cuyo Islands and cross northern Palawan as it continues westward.

Heavy to intense rains with occasional torrential downpours are likely over Central Visayas, Negros Island Region, Northern Mindanao, and Caraga, raising the risk of flash floods and landslides.

Strong to gale-force winds in these areas may pose minor to moderate threats to life and property, Pagasa warned.

Other regions, including Zamboanga Peninsula, Lanao del Sur, Masbate, Romblon, Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, and Palawan, are expected to experience gusty rains, while Metro Manila, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, and Rizal will have partly cloudy skies with isolated rain showers.

Authorities continue to monitor the storm and advise the public to stay updated on weather warnings and follow safety protocols.
