A rain-triggered landslide in Cagayan de Oro City killed four members of a family on Friday as Tropical Depression Basyang swept across parts of Mindanao, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) reported.
The victims—a couple and their two children—were buried near a quarry in Barangay Agusan after heavy rains loosened the soil, the department said.
In Misamis Oriental, three residents were injured by falling debris in Barangay Gumoong, though the incident was unrelated to the fatal landslide, the OCD added.
Basyang initially made landfall in Surigao del Sur, affecting the Caraga region where over 100,000 people across nearly 190 barangays were impacted.
More than 21,000 residents were displaced, with 6,384 families seeking refuge in 197 evacuation centers across Caraga and Northern Mindanao, some of which were opened before the storm arrived.
By Friday morning, the storm had weakened into a tropical depression with maximum sustained winds of 55 kph and gusts of up to 70 kph, moving west-northwest toward Bohol, parts of Cebu, and Negros Oriental, the state weather bureau said.
Authorities reported limited damage to homes, with two destroyed and six partially damaged, and power outages in 28 areas, most of which were restored. Monitoring continues in other flood- and landslide-prone locations in the Visayas, Palawan, and Mindoro.
