Encampments were established along the La Paz sand dunes in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte, as preparations intensified for the 2026 Balikatan Exercises that opened on Monday and were scheduled to run until May 8.
Military and local officials coordinated efforts to brief residents in nearby coastal communities, particularly in Metro La Paz, on the scope and impact of the exercises.
The 4th Marine Brigade, together with the Ilocos Norte provincial government, led the information drive to ensure public awareness and safety.
A large-scale live-fire exercise was set on May 4 as part of the joint military drills.
Authorities assured residents that increased movement of air, land, and sea assets during the period was expected and formed part of the exercise activities.
They also announced that humanitarian missions, including medical and dental services, would be conducted in nearby communities.
More than 17,000 troops from seven countries joined the drills, which covered operations across land, sea, air, and cyber domains, while a temporary no-sail zone was enforced during live-fire activities to ensure civilian safety.
