Baguio residents brace for Typhoon Uwan impact

Residents in Baguio City are preparing for the possible impact of Typhoon Uwan, with authorities raising Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 3 over Benguet.

Michael Balajadia, a resident of Barangay Camp Seven, recalled losing his car and dog to falling rocks during Typhoon Crising last July. “Sobrang laking bato ‘yun. Dalawa talaga, mas malaki pa sa bahay na ito, tapos yung tinamaan ng bato roon malaki pa,” he said.

The Ayson family also prepared their go bag on Saturday night, November 8, and plan to evacuate before heavy rains arrive. “Dahil sa experience namin na laging may nalalaglag dito, ayaw na po namin maulit… pagkatapos ng almusal, alis na kami,” said Babylyn. Julius added, “Bago man dumating ang bagyo, umaalis na kami para makaiwas for the safety na rin ng family ko.”

Tourist spots like the Lion’s Head along Kennon Road were nearly empty on Sunday, with several souvenir shops closing early. Vendor Rebecca Pulas said, “Sa ngayon nakakatakot, parang iba ‘yung ine-expect lalo na matapos ‘yung nangyari sa Cebu.”

Mayor Benjamin Magalong announced that all government offices and classes at all levels in Baguio City will be suspended on Monday due to Typhoon Uwan.
