Baguio City faces multiple landslides amid ongoing heavy rains

Baguio City has been hit by several landslides as heavy rains continue to affect the region, according to Mayor Benjamin Magalong. In an interview with ABS-CBN News, Magalong reported that at least 34 landslides have been recorded, with significant incidents occurring in Barangays Lucnab and Outlook Drive. Additionally, more than 30 trees have been uprooted in the upland city.

The adverse weather conditions have also led to damage to residential properties, with a total of 17 houses affected—two of which were completely destroyed, while 15 sustained partial damage.

As a result of the week-long weather disturbances, 28 families, or approximately 80 individuals, have been forced to evacuate their homes. Despite the challenges, Mayor Magalong stated that there is no immediate need to declare a state of calamity in the city.

“Hindi naman kasing tindi ang nangyari sa atin, [kumpara] sa ibang probinsya, tulad ng Pangasinan and La Union. And besides, kaya pa naman ng aming QRF (quick response fund) suportahan lahat ng mga operations naming,” he explained. (What happened to us is not as severe compared to other provinces, like Pangasinan and La Union. Besides, our quick response fund can still support all our operations.)

The local government continues to monitor the situation and provide assistance to those affected by the ongoing weather disturbances.
