BACOLOD CITY – The Bacolod Coliseum, a major infrastructure project in the city, is now at least 70 percent complete and is expected to be finished within the year, according to an update from the City Tourism Office on Monday.
Located between Barangays Alijis and Tangub, the coliseum is designed to accommodate up to 11,450 people for conventions, 7,800 for basketball games, and more than 10,000 attendees for large-scale events like concerts and boxing matches.
Earlier this year, the city government allocated an additional PHP50 million to cover installations not included in the original PHP800 million budget, which was sourced through a bank loan during the previous administration. The added funding will come from the city’s unobligated balances—savings from debt servicing from 2022 to 2024—under the 20-percent Development Fund.
The City Development Council approved the extra funds for the installation of operable wall partitions, movable and retractable seats/bleachers, two sets of escalators, and elevators including a VIP elevator.
Adjacent to the coliseum, a museum-auditorium is also under construction, with a project cost of over PHP400 million. This additional facility is being funded through the initiative of Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri.
