Australian Open: Djokovic extends record grand slam appearances; De Minaur advances

Novak Djokovic will add to his record number of Grand Slam match appearances when he headlines the night session on Rod Laver Arena at the 2025 Australian Open on Thursday. Djokovic faces Czech No. 26 seed Tomas Machac in his quest for a 25th Grand Slam title and an 11th title at Melbourne Park.

On Margaret Court Arena, third-seeded Coco Gauff, the 2023 US Open winner, will continue her bid for a first Australian Open title against Canadian Leylah Fernandez. Following that, second-seeded Alexander Zverev, last year’s semifinalist, will take on Britain’s Jacob Fearnley, who is making his Australian Open debut.

Day session action at Rod Laver Arena will begin with top seed Aryna Sabalenka facing Denmark’s Clara Tauson, followed by third-seeded Carlos Alcaraz, who is aiming for a career Grand Slam, against Nuno Borges.

At John Cain Arena, Roberto Carballes Baena will face Tommy Paul, while at Kia Arena, Paula Badosa will meet Marta Kostyuk, followed by Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, who will look to recover after his nearly five-hour win over Felix Auger-Aliassime on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Alex de Minaur advanced to the third round of the 2025 Australian Open with a 6-2, 6-4, 6-3 victory over American qualifier Tristan Boyer. The eighth seed won 88 percent of his first-serve points and committed only 15 unforced errors in the two-hour match.

De Minaur, competing in Melbourne Park for the eighth year, dropped serve once but maintained his perfect record against qualifiers at his home Grand Slam.

Looking ahead to his third-round match against 31st seed Francisco Cerundolo, De Minaur is aware of the challenge ahead. “It’s going to be tough, he’s a quality opponent, lots of firepower, great forehand,” said De Minaur. “I’ve got to be up for it from the very first point, bring that intensity, play some aggressive tennis.”
