Ate Leylah takes Alex under her wing! Fernandez offers Toronto tour, tells Eala: ‘If she needs help, I’m here!’

TORONTO — Alex Eala has a new “Ate” in town — and Filipino tennis fans may have just found their newest favorite WTA friendship.

Canadian star Leylah Fernandez is extending a warm hand to the Philippines’ tennis sensation, offering to help Eala around Toronto and even point her toward some of her favorite places in the city.

And if Alex needs anything at all?

Ate Leylah says she’s ready.

“If she needs any help, I’m here,” Fernandez said.

That was all it took to send the feel-good meter soaring.

With Eala making waves at the National Bank Open and Fernandez competing on home soil, the two young stars could easily be painted as rivals fighting for their own place in the WTA spotlight.

But away from the court, the story is looking very different.

It’s starting to feel like a genuine Ate-and-bunso tennis connection.

LEYLAH SAW ALEX — BUT DIDN’T WANT TO DISTURB HER

Fernandez revealed that she had already spotted Eala around the tournament grounds.

But there was one problem: Alex was heading toward the court.

Instead of stopping her for a chat, Fernandez backed off.

She knew Eala was locked in.

Fernandez said she didn’t want to interfere with the Filipina’s concentration before competition — a small but telling sign of the respect she has for the rising Philippine star.

Still, Fernandez is hoping they eventually get the chance to talk away from all the pressure.

And when that happens, Toronto could be waiting.

The Canadian ace said she would gladly suggest a few places she personally enjoys around the city if Eala wants to explore.

In other words:

Alex may already have her unofficial Toronto tour guide.

‘ATE LEYLAH’ HAS ALEX’S BACK

Fernandez, who has Filipino roots through her mother, has spoken warmly about Eala, describing her as a friend and a nice person.

She also believes the Filipina has a solid team and a strong routine around her — important ingredients as Eala deals with the growing demands that come with her rise in world tennis.

But Fernandez’s willingness to be available if Eala needs help gave their friendship an even warmer dimension.

For fans following Alex from the Philippines, the message hits differently.

Professional tennis can be brutally individual.

Players travel constantly, move from city to city and often find themselves thousands of kilometers from home.

So having someone on Tour who understands even a piece of your culture can matter.

Eala herself appears to feel the same way.

ALEX RETURNS THE LOVE

The Filipina star described Fernandez as a “great person” and said their relationship is good.

Eala also acknowledged Fernandez’s Filipino heritage and explained that she enjoys connecting with other players on Tour who share links to the Philippines.

She cited Sabrina Santamaria and Desirae Krawczyk as other players with Filipino connections whom she has gotten along with.

Now Fernandez appears to be firmly part of that circle.

And there’s something particularly fitting about it happening in Toronto, a city with a massive Filipino community.

TWO STARS, ONE PINOY CONNECTION

Fernandez may represent Canada and Eala proudly carries the Philippine flag, but their shared cultural connection is giving fans something extra to cheer about.

Both are young.

Both have carried huge expectations.

Both know what it means to perform under intense pressure.

And both have become fan favorites well beyond the countries they represent.

That makes the friendship impossible to ignore.

One day, they could be standing across the net trying to knock each other out of a tournament.

The next?

Ate Leylah could be telling Alex where to eat and where to hang out in Toronto.

That’s tennis.

That’s family energy.

And that’s exactly why Filipino fans are eating this story up.

For now, Eala has more important business to handle on the court.

But once the rackets are packed away and the schedules finally align, don’t be surprised if Toronto gets the crossover Pinoy fans are waiting for.

Ate Leylah and Alex, together off court.

And judging from Fernandez’s message, one thing is already certain:

Bunso Alex has an Ate watching her back in Canada.
