ASEAN and Japan defense leaders have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening regional security cooperation amid growing geopolitical uncertainties, natural disasters, and disruptions to global supply chains.

The discussions took place during the ASEAN-Japan Defence Ministers’ Informal Meeting, held on the sidelines of the 20th ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) and the 13th ADMM-Plus in Cebu.

Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro, who chaired the meeting, emphasized the importance of sustained cooperation between ASEAN and Japan in promoting peace, stability, and resilience across Southeast Asia and the broader Indo-Pacific region.

Teodoro said the meeting provided an opportunity to strengthen defense relations and address emerging security challenges as the international environment continues to evolve.

He also highlighted the significance of the Philippines’ ASEAN chairmanship in 2026, which coincides with the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Japan.

The defense chief underscored the importance of maintaining constructive partnerships with regional allies and dialogue partners to support ASEAN’s collective efforts toward regional peace and security.

Meanwhile, Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi reaffirmed Tokyo’s support for ASEAN unity, centrality, and resilience amid an increasingly complex regional security environment.

Koizumi identified severe natural disasters, disruptions to international supply chains, and changing military dynamics as overlapping challenges requiring stronger cooperation among regional partners.

He emphasized the importance of coordinated efforts in addressing these concerns and maintaining stability across the Indo-Pacific.

The meeting highlighted the continuing role of ASEAN-Japan defense engagement in addressing traditional and emerging security concerns.

It also provided a platform for defense leaders to exchange views on the future of regional cooperation and the importance of maintaining dialogue amid shifting geopolitical conditions.

The Philippines, as ASEAN chair for 2026, continues to promote regional cooperation and constructive engagement with dialogue partners to strengthen security, stability, and resilience in Southeast Asia.
