On Saturday, April 26, Argentines gathered in Plaza de Mayo to bid farewell to Pope Francis, celebrating his legacy with an open-air mass. The mass was held in front of the cathedral where the late pope once served as archbishop of Buenos Aires. The event featured giant screens showcasing the life of Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the first Latin American pope, who was born in Buenos Aires in 1936.
The plaza was filled with young people, families, and communities that Pope Francis had frequently addressed, offering words of encouragement. After the sermon, a symbolic caravan circled the plaza, honoring his legacy and making a pilgrimage to some of the city’s most impoverished areas.
Earlier, the Vatican held a funeral and humble burial for Pope Francis, who passed away at the age of 88 following a stroke on Monday.
