Antipolo Diocese eyes Guinness Record for 2025 Alay Lakad Pilgrimage

The Diocese of Antipolo is inviting the Catholic faithful to join the 2025 Alay Lakad, as it aims to set a Guinness World Record for the “largest gathering for a walking spiritual pilgrimage in 12 hours.”

Antipolo Bishop Ruperto Santos encouraged Filipinos to participate in the 17-kilometer walk from Metro Manila to the Antipolo Cathedral, officially known as the International Shrine of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage. The pilgrimage is scheduled from 6 p.m. on April 17 (Maundy Thursday) to 6 a.m. on April 18 (Good Friday).

“Such a record would not only highlight the spiritual significance of the pilgrimage but also bring global recognition to the cultural and religious traditions of the Philippines,” said Santos in a radio interview.

In 2024, an estimated 7.4 million people joined the pilgrimage. Upon reaching the cathedral, pilgrims traditionally offer prayers and coins as a sign of solidarity with the Church’s mission. Last year, over PHP100,000 was collected and used to help build the Chapel of Our Lady of Antipolo in Tanay, Rizal.

“There is convergence start, our pilgrims will start from where they are, traverse Ortigas Avenue Extension. And they reach the Diocese of Antipolo (Cainta), there will be PNP posts, stations for prayers and rests. PNP Rizal helps and directs us. Along the way to Antipolo Cathedral, there are designated volunteers to assist and guide,” Santos shared in a Viber message.

He said preparations for the Guinness record attempt are ongoing and added, “This is the first time we are trying to apply, we are processing everything. Last year those who participated according to PNP Rizal was 7.4 million. We expect this year more than that.”

Meanwhile, the Antipolo Cathedral is also preparing for the formal pilgrimage season starting in May and lasting until July.
