Angkas and Angkasangga: Empowering riders, transforming lives

George Royeca, Angkas president and CEO and Angkasanga partylist first nominee, aims to create a system where government policies and legislation acknowledge and support informal workers in the transport sector and transform them into entrepreneurs and the backbone of the country’s economy.

Angkas, the pioneering motorcycle taxi service, has become more than a transportation solution—it catalyzes economic and social change in the Philippines.

Serving five million daily commuters while uplifting over 50,000 biker partners, Angkas has turned once-informal operators into recognized contributors to the nation’s economy. Today, through its political wing, Angkasangga, the movement aims to secure lasting opportunities for all motorcycle riders and the wider informal sector.

A vision rooted in empowerment
At the core of this transformation is Angkasangga, a political movement established with COMELEC’s party-list approval. Its mission is to advocate for the rights, recognition, and empowerment of informal workers, whom conventional policies have long overlooked.

As George Royeca, President and CEO of Angkas and Angkasangga’s first nominee, explained on the Tara na Tambayan radio program aired over DWBL, “We have a focused advocacy. And that is to improve the livelihood of motorcycle riders.”

He added, “We started Angkas eight years ago with one mission. To ease traffic congestion in Metro Manila while transforming motorcycle riders into entrepreneurs or ‘nanopreneurs,’ giving them income opportunities that will change their lives for good.”

Royeca’s words capture the essence of a movement born from the belief that every rider deserves dignity, security, and a fair chance to succeed.

Transforming lives and driving economic growth
Angkas has revolutionized the motorcycle taxi industry by integrating its riders into the formal economy.

Through strategic partnerships, the company has secured essential benefits such as Pag-IBIG, the Social Security System (SSS), and PhilHealth for its partners—once marginalized in the informal sector. This integration enhances individual riders’ lives and contributes to the country’s broader economic development.

By turning everyday transportation providers into “nanopreneurs,” Angkas create ripple effects that boost local economies and foster entrepreneurial growth.

Moreover, Angkas has addressed one of the significant challenges motorcycle riders face: insurance access.

“One of the main challenges of motorcycle riders and even tricycle drivers and operators is access to insurance. We want to change that by helping these informal sectors into the formal financial system. We will give them access to insurance services ‘para hindi naman nila malaking problema kung sakaling may sakunang mangyara habang sila ay naghahanapbuhay,'” Royeca emphasized.

This initiative protects livelihoods and ensures riders can pursue their work without undue financial risk.

Innovation and safety as cornerstones
Technology and innovation have been at the heart of Angkas’ success. The platform’s exceptional safety record—a mere 0.003% accident rate over 100 million rides—stands as a testament to its commitment to professionalism and reliability.

This achievement elevates the status of motorcycle riders and solidifies the credibility of the entire industry, paving the way for greater economic contributions and job creation.

A future for every rider
As Angkasangga charts a path toward political empowerment, its vision remains clear: to extend these transformative opportunities to every motorcycle rider in the Philippines.

By championing policies that integrate informal workers into the formal economy, the movement ensures that all share progress, innovation, and economic development benefits.
