Angel Canino exploded for a season-high 27 points to lift De La Salle University past University of Santo Tomas, 15-25, 25-17, 24-26, 25-21, 16-14, in the UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament on Saturday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The match came down to a tense fifth set, with both teams tied at 12-12. Reg Jurado’s block put UST ahead, 13-12, forcing a La Salle timeout. Shevana Laput responded with a crucial attack and block to bring the Lady Spikers to match point, but Jurado kept UST alive. In the end, Laput delivered in the clutch, and Amie Provido’s block sealed the win for La Salle.
Canino, who collided with Laput in the fourth set, was taken out of the venue after the match. She finished with 24 attacks and 13 digs, leading La Salle to a 6-3 record, tying them with Far Eastern University in second place. Laput contributed 16 points, while Provido added 12.
Jurado scored 22 points for UST, but it wasn’t enough to end their losing streak. The Golden Tigresses dropped their third straight game, slipping to a 5-4 record.
