An estimated 1.2 million devotees, pilgrims, and visitors converged along the banks of the Naga River on Saturday to witness the annual fluvial procession of El Divino Rostro and Nuestra Señora de Peñafrancia. The iconic religious tradition was held at nighttime for the first time in history due to low tide conditions in the river.
Devotees of all ages lined the procession route to honor “Ina,” including 60-year-old Lito Almazar, who has made the 14-kilometer journey from Canaman annually for 50 years to pray for his family’s health and safety. Street vendor Lailane Nebria noted that the feast serves as a crucial lifeline for local businesses regardless of water conditions, while 22-year-old Nathaniel Serrado stressed the importance of youth involvement in preserving religious heritage amid the growing influence of modern technology.
Police Regional Office in Bicol Director Brig. Gen. Randy Glenn Silvio confirmed that the historic evening event concluded peacefully. Silvio credited the orderly outcome to extensive security operations and continuous cooperation among police personnel, local government units, volunteers, and the general public throughout the festivities.
