The unexpected play electrified the arena and handed a lucky Bucknell student a $10,000 prize.
During the second half of the game at Sojka Pavilion, Rodriguez, who has become a notable co-owner of the Minnesota Timberwolves, launched a high-arching shot from the half-court line.
The ball banked perfectly off the backboard, inspiring excitement among the cheering student section. “It was like something out of a movie,” one student remarked, adding that the cash prize would help offset rising tuition costs.
Rodriguez’s visit to campus was part of a broader engagement, during which he spoke about his entrepreneurial venture, Jump Platforms. The company, co-founded alongside Bucknell trustee Jordy Leiser and business partner Marc Lore, is gaining attention not only for its innovative approach but also due to its founders’ high-profile ambitions.
Rodriguez and Lore have been embroiled in a lengthy arbitration process to secure full ownership of the Timberwolves and the Minnesota Lynx. With a decisive ruling in their favor earlier this month, the duo is set to finalize the takeover once current owner Glen Taylor and the NBA conclude the remaining formalities.
Beyond his current business pursuits, Rodriguez’s legacy in professional sports is well-cemented. Over a career from 1994 to 2016, he racked up three MVP awards and played a crucial role in the New York Yankees’ 2009 World Series triumph.
Since retiring from baseball, he has transitioned seamlessly into various roles as a businessman and sports analyst, contributing his expertise to Fox Sports and ESPN networks.
With this remarkable win, the Bucknell Bison now boast a 15-14 record for the season. They currently hold second place in the Patriot League standings, trailing American University by just one game as they prepare for the final two contests of the regular season.
