You have no choices about how you lose, but you do have a choice about how you come back and prepare to win again.

Once again, consistency was the issue as our tennis sensation Alexandra ‘Alex’ Eala failed to capitilize a strong start, losing her momentum, 6-7 (6), 1-6, to Tereza Valentová of the Czech Republic in the first round of the 2026 Qatar Open.
Eala led 4-2 in the first set, but the 19-year-old Valentová slowly caught up to take a 1-0 lead. In the second set, the Czech pulled away, securing her spot in the second round of the prestigious tournament held at the luxurious Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex in the Qatari capital.
Nonetheless, our country’s pride walked away with a hefty US$18,300 (over P1 million) in prize money as she now prepares to compete again in the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) 500 Dubai Tennis Championships (also known as the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships for sponsorship reasons) at the Aviation Club Tennis Centre in Dubai from February 15 to 21.

FILIPINO fans question why Eala lost when she has climbed steadily in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA)’s world rankings in the past months to break to the top at number 40 (as of February 9, 2026).
Based on expert analysis, the Rafa Nadal Tennis Academy graduate failed to move forward in the Round of 64 of the Qatar Open due to a combination of factors.
Here are some key points that contributed to her defeat:

  • Tight First Set: Eala had a promising start, clawing back from a 0-2 deficit to lead 6-5 in the first set. However, Valentova held her serve in the 12th game and won the tiebreaker 7-6(6).
  • Momentum Shift: After losing the first set, Eala struggled to regain momentum, allowing Valentova to take control of the match. The Czech player dominated the second set, winning it 6-1.
  • Valentová’s Strong Performance: Valentova played a strong match, serving aces and capitalizing on Eala’s mistakes. She also had a strong mental game, staying focused and composed under pressure.
  • Previous Encounters: This was Eala’s second loss to Valentová, who had previously beaten her at the Japan Women’s Open last October.
  • Lack of Recovery Time: Eala’s early exit might be attributed to her busy schedule, having played in several tournaments recently, including the Abu Dhabi Open, where she reached the quarterfinals.
Overall, it was a one tough match for the 20-year-old from Quezon City and her opponent’s strong performance and experience in big tournaments appeared to have made the difference.
