Tennis breakthrough star Alex Eala is set to face Valentina Ryser of Switzerland in the Round of 16 at the WTA125 Ilkley Open in the United Kingdom on Wednesday. This matchup follows Eala’s impressive victory over Lizette Cabrera, winning 7(7)-6, 6-3 in the first round.
The 24-year-old Ryser is currently ranked World No. 230 in singles by the Women’s Tennis Association, boasting a 22/11 win-loss record this year. In her first-round match, Ryser defeated Japan’s Sara Saito with a score of 6-0, 6-4, setting up the upcoming clash with Eala.
Ryser advanced to the main draw of the Ilkley Open after coming through the qualifying rounds, where she triumphed over the UK’s Allegra Korpanec Davies (6-0, 6-2) and Japan’s Sayaka Ishii (6-4, 7-5). Eala, on the other hand, is the No. 1 seed in the tournament, currently ranked 77th in the world.
Eala and Ryser have faced each other twice in the past. Ryser won their encounter at the W75 Trnava tournament in March (4-6, 6-2, 6-2), while Eala claimed victory in 2023 at the W25 Yecla Finals in Spain, winning 6-3, 7-5, which marked Eala’s first International Tennis Federation crown.
As Eala prepares for this important match, fans are eager to see if she can continue her strong performance and advance further in the tournament.
