Alex Eala hits reset: From Jingshan setback to Suzhou redemption

A semifinal stumble in Jingshan won’t slow Alex Eala down. Just two days after bowing to New Zealand’s Lulu Sun in a grueling three-set battle, the 20-year-old Filipina tennis star is back in action—this time at the Suzhou WTA 125 in China.

Her first hurdle? A familiar opponent: Poland’s Katarzyna Kawa. The two cross paths Monday morning in the round of 32, scheduled at 10 a.m., with Eala eager to rewrite their history. Their only previous meeting came at the W60 Templeton in 2022, where Eala—then still a teenager ranked outside the top 250—fell in three sets. Fast forward to today, and it’s a very different matchup.

The growth of a contender
Since that early clash, Eala has transformed from promising junior to a top-60 mainstay in the WTA rankings. She peaked at No. 56 in June and currently sits at 58—lightyears from her 2022 self. Her game has matured, her confidence sharpened, and her presence on tour undeniable.

Kawa, meanwhile, has hovered around the tour’s mid-tiers. Once ranked as high as 112, the 32-year-old now stands at No. 124—dangerous, but not the type to intimidate a surging Eala.

Road to Suzhou

Eala’s last campaign in Jingshan showcased her trademark grit. She opened with a straight-sets win over Belarusian Aliona Falei, steamrolled Japan’s Mei Yamaguchi, and brushed aside local favorite Lu Jiajing to reach the semifinals. But against Lulu Sun, the power faded late. Despite a blazing first set, Eala surrendered momentum and the match slipped away: 6-3, 4-6, 2-6.

For Kawa, Suzhou comes after a mixed bag at the China Open qualifiers. She stunned Australia’s Storm Hunter in a tense opener but fell short against Hungary’s Dalma Gálfi in the next round, missing her chance at a main-draw berth.

What’s at stake
For Eala, this is about more than revenge. Suzhou is her launchpad before heading to the prestigious Wuhan WTA 1000. A strong run here could boost her rhythm, her confidence, and perhaps her momentum heading into a stage where the very best await.

Filipino fans have seen this story before: every setback only fuels Eala’s rise. Against Kawa, she won’t just be chasing a win—she’ll be testing the limits of how far her evolution can take her.
