Fresh off a historic run at the Miami Open, Filipino tennis sensation Alex Eala is set to return to action as the top seed at the 2025 Oeiras Ladies Open in Portugal, marking a significant milestone in her young professional career.
The 19-year-old will headline the WTA 125 tournament from April 14 to 20, her first competition since a jaw-dropping performance in Miami that saw her defeat three Grand Slam champions—most notably world No. 1 Iga Swiatek and American standout Madison Keys—on her way to a semifinal finish. Though she fell short of a finals berth after a hard-fought three-set loss to Jessica Pegula, Eala’s meteoric rise sent ripples through the global tennis scene and catapulted her to a career-high ranking of World No. 73.
Now entering unfamiliar territory as the tournament’s top seed, Eala acknowledges the pressure that comes with her newfound status but embraces it as part of her evolution.
“There’s definitely pressure after what I accomplished, but I think that’s a positive sign,” Eala said during a virtual press conference. “This is a new experience—being a top 100 player and a seeded entry. It’s something I’m learning to navigate.”
The Oeiras Ladies Open serves as the official launch of Eala’s clay court season, which is packed with high-level competition across Europe. After Portugal, she’s set to compete at the prestigious WTA 1000 Mutua Madrid Open beginning April 22. Her calendar also includes back-to-back WTA 125 events in Vic, Spain, and Parma, Italy, before joining the field at the WTA 1000 tournament in Rome in early May.
A product of the Rafa Nadal Academy, Eala continues to draw global attention not just for her on-court prowess but for her maturity and resilience. As she gears up for the grind of the European clay swing, the spotlight will only grow brighter—and so will the expectations.
Still, Eala remains focused on one goal: maintaining the level that got her here, and proving she belongs among the world’s elite.
