Rising Filipina tennis ace Alex Eala showcased grit and poise on Sunday as she punched her ticket to the main draw of the Nottingham Open, surviving back-to-back marathon matches in the qualifying rounds.
Eala, just 19 and currently ranked World No. 77, overcame Romanian powerhouse Anca Todoni in a grueling three-set encounter, 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-3. Despite Todoni’s relentless serving—blasting 12 aces in the match—Eala maintained her composure, breaking serve at critical moments and displaying her signature baseline consistency.
The win followed another hard-fought three-set victory a day earlier, where Eala battled past Varvara Gracheva, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Across both matches, the Filipina rising star spent over four hours on court, underlining her physical and mental endurance just days before the main draw kicks off.
Eala will now face World No. 31 Magda Linette of Poland on Tuesday in what promises to be a clash of youth versus experience. Linette, the tournament’s sixth seed, has had a rocky season with a 15-14 win-loss record, and enters Nottingham on the back of a first-round grass court loss to American Bernarda Pera at the Libema Open.
Though the odds may favor the veteran, Eala has momentum and tenacity on her side—traits that have carried her to two ITF titles and a growing reputation as the future of Southeast Asian tennis.
This will be one of Eala’s first major grass-court tests in the 2025 season, as she eyes deeper runs and potential upsets ahead of Wimbledon next month. With her confidence building and game evolving, the Nottingham Open could become a turning point for the young Filipina’s summer campaign.
