AFP honors fallen aircrew in Typhoon Tino mission

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on Wednesday honored the pilots and aircrew members who lost their lives when a Super Huey helicopter crashed during a humanitarian assistance and disaster response (HADR) mission amid Typhoon Tino.

“Our sincerest condolences to the families of our fallen heroes,” the AFP said in a statement. “We share in your grief and extend our unwavering support during this most difficult time.”

According to the Philippine Air Force (PAF), the helicopter was carrying two pilots and four aircrew members when it went down in Agusan del Sur on Tuesday afternoon. The aircraft was part of a four-helicopter mission en route to Butuan City to assess typhoon damage.

“The aircraft and its crew were on a HADR mission – serving communities in need and embodying the highest ideals of service beyond self,” the AFP added, praising their “dedication, skill, and courage.”

The AFP also emphasized that the tragedy highlights “the profound risks faced by those who serve even in missions of compassion and relief for their countrymen.”

Meanwhile, the Department of National Defense (DND) expressed its condolences to the victims’ families, saying their “dedication to duty and sacrifice will always be remembered.”

“We pray for their eternal peace and shall extend all available support to their families at this difficult time,” the DND said.

The PAF confirmed that a thorough investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the accident.
