Mercy Sunot, vocalist of the iconic Filipino band Aegis, has died at 48 from cancer at Stanford Hospital in San Francisco, California on Sunday evening, November 17.
Aegis confirmed the news on Facebook, describing Mercy as “one of the beloved vocalists” whose voice “brought comfort, joy, and strength” to fans.
“Mercy’s voice wasn’t just a part of AEGIS—it was a voice that brought comfort, joy, and strength to so many. She has touched countless lives, inspiring fans and lifting spirits with every song she sang. Her passion, warmth, and unforgettable presence on stage will forever be cherished in our hearts,” the band added.
Mercy had been in California receiving treatment for Stage 4 breast and lung cancer. In a recent TikTok post, she revealed that after a lung surgery, she was placed in intensive care due to breathing difficulties. She tearfully asked for prayers, saying, “Ipag-pray nyo ko please para matapos na itong pagsubok na ito.”
On November 8, Mercy attended a concert by veteran singer Eva Eugenio in Hayward, California, where she performed a few songs at the audience’s request. At the time, she said she was responding well to chemotherapy and was scheduled for surgery on November 12.
On November 16, Mercy expressed a desire to return to the Philippines, but her California-based friend said doctors denied the request due to her weakened condition. The following day, she succumbed to multiple organ failure.
Aegis, known for its enduring hits such as “Halik,” “Basang-Basa sa Ulan,” and “Luha,” continues to be a favorite in karaoke and videoke circles. The band’s vocal lineup includes Mercy, along with her sisters, Juliet and Kris Sunot.
