The Manila Police District (MPD) will deploy 500 officers around Quiapo Church on January 9 to ensure security during the Feast of the Black Nazarene, which draws millions of devotees each year.
Brig. Gen. Thomas Ibay, MPD director, confirmed that preparations for the event will begin with the blessing of the replica of the Nazareno, followed by the First Friday and First Sunday masses leading up to the feast.
“That will be the start ng festivities natin, ‘yung blessing ng replica, then first Friday and first Sunday of the year. So lahat ‘yun pinaghahandaan natin,” Ibay said in an interview with GMA News on Monday.
As part of security measures, several roads around the church will be closed, though Villalobos Street will remain open for access. “Ang papasukan lang po ng mga magsisimba ay dito lang po sa Villalobos. Lahat na po sa mga side, e-exit na, para hindi na magkasalu-salubong,” Ibay explained.
Police will also inspect the Traslacion route, where the revered black image of Jesus Nazareno will be processed from Quirino Grandstand to Quiapo Church. Officers are set to conduct a walkthrough in early January to remove any potential obstructions.
In total, 13,000 uniformed personnel from various agencies, including the Philippine National Police, Armed Forces of the Philippines, Philippine Coast Guard, and Bureau of Fire Protection, will assist in securing the event.
Authorities are urging devotees to avoid bringing large bags, as only clear bags will be allowed. They are also advising against carrying valuables or wearing jewelry and restricting the use of hats and caps.
