Nearly half of students in the Davao Region are struggling with reading, according to an assessment by the Department of Education (DepEd), highlighting persistent challenges in literacy and basic education.
Data released on October 27, 2026, showed that 48% of learners across the region were classified as struggling readers at the beginning of School Year 2026–2027.
In Davao City alone, approximately 45% of students were identified as struggling readers, indicating that reading difficulties remain a significant concern even in the region’s major urban center.
The findings underscore the need for stronger literacy interventions, improved reading instruction, and additional learning support to help students develop essential reading and comprehension skills.
The Second Congressional Commission on Education (EDCOM II) also presented data highlighting reading challenges across the region’s provinces and cities.
Education stakeholders have emphasized the importance of addressing foundational learning gaps early to prevent reading difficulties from affecting students’ performance in other academic subjects.
The assessment highlights the continuing challenge facing the country’s education system in ensuring that learners acquire the literacy skills necessary for academic success and lifelong learning.
