The Philippine National Police arrested 13 individuals during a raid on an alleged illegal fuel operation in Lucena City, Quezon, on July 27.
The operation was carried out in Barangay Silangang Mayao by joint police units from Calabarzon, the Quezon Police Provincial Office and the Lucena City police.
Authorities alleged that the suspects were caught transferring petroleum products from tanker trucks into intermediate bulk containers and refilling liquefied petroleum gas cylinders from a tanker.
Among those arrested was a 17-year-old, who was processed in accordance with laws governing children in conflict with the law.
Police seized tanker trucks, delivery vehicles, LPG cylinders, fuel containers, transfer equipment and petroleum and LPG products with an estimated value exceeding Php 16.2 million.
The suspects may face charges for alleged violations of the Oil Pilferage Law and the LPG Industry Regulation Act. They were informed of their constitutional rights and taken to the Lucena City police station for inquest proceedings.
PNP chief Jose Melencio Nartatez said the operation formed part of the police force’s campaign against economic crimes, including illegal fuel activities that endanger public safety and legitimate businesses.
He said the PNP would continue intelligence-driven operations while ensuring that all law enforcement actions are carried out in accordance with legal procedures and with respect for the rights of those involved.
