Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy nominated Naftogaz chief executive Sergii Koretskyi as the country’s next prime minister, parliamentary officials said Wednesday.

Verkhovna Rada Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk said the legislature had received Zelenskyy’s formal submission and would consider the appointment under established procedures.

Koretskyi needs the approval of lawmakers before he can take office and begin forming a new Cabinet.

He was selected to replace Yulia Svyrydenko, whose dismissal was approved by parliament on Tuesday with 258 votes.

Under Ukrainian law, the removal of the prime minister also resulted in the resignation of the entire Cabinet.

Zelenskyy earlier said the country needed a renewed government as part of a broader political strategy aimed at improving preparedness and strengthening governance.

Svyrydenko, who had served as prime minister since July 2025, confirmed that she would leave the post. Zelenskyy said she could be assigned to another important role involving relations with a key international partner.

Ukrainian public broadcaster Suspilne reported that Svyrydenko was being considered for appointment as ambassador to the United States, although no official announcement had been made.
