Filipino Olympic champion Carlos Edriel Yulo has booked his place in the finals of both the men’s vault and floor exercise at the 53rd FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Yulo delivered a standout performance in the qualifiers on Monday, topping the men’s vault with 14.750 points, ahead of Armenia’s Arthur Davtyan (14.566) and Ukraine’s Nathan Chepurnyi (14.316) in Subdivision 7 at the Indonesia Arena.

In the floor exercise, the 24-year-old gymnast finished a close second with 14.560 points, just behind Fil-British standout Jake Jarman (14.700). American Kameron Nelson placed third with 14.300 points.

“First of all, I want to thank God for my performance. I’m just grateful that I was safe from any mishap and that I was able to compete and show what I’ve been working on,” said Yulo, who captured gold in both events at the 2024 Paris Olympics. “Even though I couldn’t do the all-around, I’m still proud to be here and still pushing for the best.”

Currently recovering from a wrist injury, Yulo will compete in the floor exercise finals on Friday and the vault finals on Saturday.

Gymnastics Association of the Philippines (GAP) President Cynthia Carrion praised Yulo’s resilience and form. “We’re proud that Carlos made it to both finals despite the challenges. That was our goal, and we’re hoping he can repeat his golden performances from Paris,” Carrion said. “We ask all Filipinos to continue praying and cheering for him as he fights for another set of medals.”

Meanwhile, Yulo’s teammates fell short in their respective qualifying bids. Juancho Miguel Besana placed 39th in the all-around with 68.645 points, Ivan Cruz ranked 66th in the vault with 12.000, and Justine Ace de Leon finished 45th in the rings with 12.200.

As Yulo eyes another world podium finish, Filipino fans are once again rallying behind their gymnastics hero — a symbol of precision, perseverance, and Filipino pride on the global stage.
