Forces aligned with Yemen’s internationally recognized government said early Monday that they intercepted what they described as “hostile Houthi drones” west of the southern city of Aden.
The Southern Armed Forces, led by Presidential Leadership Council member Abdul Rahman al-Muharrami, said the drones were stopped before reaching their intended targets.
The forces did not disclose how many drones were involved, where they originated or whether the interception caused casualties or damage.
The Iran-backed Houthis did not immediately comment on the claim.
Yemen had experienced a period of relative calm since April 2022 following years of fighting between government forces, backed by a Saudi-led coalition, and the Houthis.
The Houthis seized the capital Sanaa and large parts of Yemen in 2014, triggering a conflict that drew in regional powers and created a prolonged humanitarian crisis.
Regional tensions intensified after the Gaza war began in late 2023, with the Houthis launching attacks against Israel and commercial vessels in the Red Sea.
Recent renewed fighting has raised concerns that Yemen could slide back into broader conflict after years of reduced hostilities.
