BEIJING – Chinese President Xi Jinping will pay a state visit to the United States from Sept. 23 to 25 for talks with US President Donald Trump on bilateral relations and global peace and development, Beijing announced Monday.
The three-day trip will be Xi’s first state visit to the US since 2015, when he was hosted by then President Barack Obama. Xi later met Trump during his first term in 2017 and visited the US again in 2023 for talks with then President Joe Biden on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said Xi and Trump are expected to hold in-depth discussions on major issues affecting China-US relations as well as international peace and development.
The visit comes about four months after Trump traveled to China for a state visit from May 13 to 15, underscoring renewed high-level engagement between the world’s two largest economies.
Guo described the exchange of state visits within six months as significant for bilateral relations, saying direct engagement between the two leaders provides strategic guidance for China-US ties.
Beijing said it wants to strengthen dialogue and cooperation with Washington while managing differences and maintaining stability in the relationship.
The talks are expected to cover trade and economic issues as well as international security concerns, including the continuing US-Iran conflict and instability in the Middle East. China has called on Washington and Tehran to exercise restraint and return to negotiations.
US reports said Trump plans to personally welcome Xi at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland before formal meetings in Washington. The visit is also expected to include a state ceremony and dinner at the White House.
Xi has visited the United States several times since becoming Chinese president in 2013, but this week’s trip will mark his first US state visit in more than a decade.
