Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday extended congratulations to Donald Trump on his election as president of the United States.
In his message, Xi stated that China and the U.S. must “get along” and “strengthen dialogue” in order to build a constructive partnership.
“Xi Jinping pointed out that history has shown that China and the United States benefit from cooperation and suffer from confrontation,” Chinese state broadcaster CCTV said in a readout of Xi’s message, calling for a “stable, healthy, and sustainable China-US relationship.”
Xi expressed hope that both sides will uphold the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation, while enhancing dialogue and communication, effectively managing differences, and expanding areas of mutually beneficial collaboration.
In a separate development on the same day, Chinese Vice-President Han Zheng congratulated J.D. Vance on his election as Vice President of the United States.
