A volunteer firefighter has formally filed a complaint against a Marikina police officer following a viral video showing the officer berating him during an incident in the city.
Earl Joseph Lantin submitted the complaint to the National Police Commission’s (Napolcom) Inspection, Monitoring, and Investigation Service on Monday. The action comes after footage of Police Corporal Michel De La Paz went viral, prompting public outcry.
Napolcom Chief Commissioner Rafael Vicente Calinisan said the commission had already launched a preliminary probe immediately after the video surfaced. Lantin’s complaint will allow a more thorough review of the officer’s conduct.
De La Paz was temporarily relieved of duty and reassigned to the Holding Unit of the Marikina Police Headquarters Support Service. Calinisan emphasized that being removed from active duty does not end the officer’s accountability.
He also highlighted that the police have a duty to maintain professionalism and public trust. “Every officer must earn the right to wear the uniform and carry the badge,” Calinisan said, noting that the investigation will be conducted independently and impartially.
Calinisan underscored the importance of respect for civilians and fellow public servants, including volunteer firefighters. He stressed that the mandate of police officers is to serve and protect all citizens at all times.
Napolcom reaffirmed its commitment to uphold discipline and integrity within the police service, noting that officers who fail to meet professional standards will face administrative action.
