The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) clarified on Saturday that the Vice Presidential Security and Protection Group (VPSPG) has not been disbanded, but rather reorganized.
In an official statement, the AFP said the VPSPG has been restructured into the AFP Security and Protection Group (AFPSPG) to unify and enhance security operations.
“This administrative adjustment was undertaken to unify security and protection operations. It ensures the continued, uninterrupted, and robust protection of the Vice President within a more integrated and optimized framework,” the AFP explained.
The AFP emphasized that the reorganization offers a more streamlined and effective approach to ensuring the safety of both current and future Vice Presidents.
The military also urged the public to refrain from spreading misinformation regarding the changes.
“We encourage our fellow Filipinos to use communication platforms to promote unity, peace, and understanding—not to sow discord, hatred, or division,” the AFP said.
“The AFP remains fully committed to the safety and protection of the Vice President and all key officials of the government,” it added.
The VPSPG was originally established in June 2022. Prior to that, Vice Presidents were protected by the Security and Protection Battalion under the AFP General Headquarters and Headquarters Support Command, with no dedicated military unit assigned solely for their security.
According to the AFP, the new structure is designed to provide a more efficient and effective system for safeguarding the nation’s second-highest official.
