Vatican to evaluate Pope Francis’ presence at holy week celebrations

The Holy See Press Office announced on Thursday that Pope Francis’ participation in Holy Week celebrations will be assessed based on his health condition in the coming weeks.

“It will be necessary to see the improvements of the Pope’s health condition over the coming weeks to evaluate his potential presence, and on which terms, at Holy Week celebrations,” the press office stated.

The Vatican released its Holy Week and Easter Octave schedule, spanning from Palm Sunday on April 13 to April 27, the day of the canonization of Blessed Carlo Acutis. However, the pope’s presence and the names of other celebrants are not yet confirmed.

Pope Francis, 88, was recently discharged from the hospital after 38 days of treatment for pneumonia and is expected to undergo at least two months of recovery.

On April 27, during the Roman Catholic Jubilee, Carlo Acutis—a 15-year-old Italian student from Lombardy who died of leukemia in 2006—will be canonized. Acutis, often referred to as the “patron saint of the internet,” was beatified in 2020 in Assisi and has since been an inspiration for many young believers.
