The inaugural V-League Visayas is set to redefine Philippine volleyball, showcasing that talent can emerge from the heart of the Visayas just as easily as from major cities. Kicking off on July 5, this month-long tournament aims to celebrate school spirit and athletic excellence while providing provincial collegiate players with the recognition and opportunities they deserve.
“This is more than a competition,” said Grace Antigua, head coach of the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors. “This is a dream platform for our players – a place where they can finally be seen and, hopefully, be called up to greater opportunities.” The USC Warriors are among the pioneering schools participating in this groundbreaking event.
The league, a regional offshoot of the successful Premier Volleyball League (PVL), promises the same level of competition and visibility that has propelled women’s volleyball in recent years. It represents a full-circle moment for Sports Vision, the organizing body that revitalized collegiate volleyball in 2004. “This is grassroots. Once younger athletes see that we have our own Visayas V-League, they will be inspired to be part of the bigger volleyball scene in the country,” Antigua added. Assistant coach Harvey Bernil emphasized the league’s significance, stating, “They no longer have to settle for watching games on television. Now, they can be the players others look up to.”
For many provincial athletes, opportunities have been scarce. “I’d love to continue playing, but you have to be realistic,” admitted a USC Warrior. The Visayas V-League could change that, offering a credible pathway from student-athlete to professional player.
“This will be their stepping stone,” Bernil noted. The focus for participating schools extends beyond winning; it’s about creating a sustainable development pipeline that elevates volleyball as a viable career option. Antigua expressed her dream for players to aspire not just to play in college but to reach the national team and go professional. The V-League Visayas is quickly becoming a symbol of hope and ambition for the region’s volleyball community, where passion for the game meets the drive to succeed. For young athletes in the Visayas, this could be the start of something extraordinary.
