The University of Santo Tomas finally found its rhythm in UAAP Season 88, delivering a composed and convincing straight-sets victory over Ateneo de Manila University, 26-24, 25-18, 25-21, on Wednesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum to jumpstart its women’s volleyball campaign.
More than just a result in the standings, the sweep felt like a release for the Golden Tigresses, who showed sharper execution, steadier nerves in crucial moments, and renewed confidence after a difficult opening stretch to the season. With the win, UST moved into the victory column at 1-2, signaling that its season is very much alive.
Angge Poyos was at the center of the breakthrough, delivering a commanding all-around performance that anchored UST on both ends of the floor. She finished with 21 points, built largely on 19 attacks, and added a block and a service ace, while contributing in reception and floor defense as the Tigresses repeatedly leaned on her in pressure situations.
UST’s balance also came through in Reg Jurado’s steady presence. Jurado posted a double-double with 12 points and 12 digs, providing stability in long rallies and helping the Tigresses maintain control as sets tightened. Together, they set the tone for a team that looked far more assured than in its earlier outings.
The opening set proved to be the turning point of the match. Ateneo pushed UST to the limit, but the Tigresses held firm in the closing exchanges to steal the frame, 26-24. That composure carried over into the next two sets, where UST dictated the tempo, capitalized on transition opportunities, and steadily widened the gap as Ateneo struggled to keep pace.
For Ateneo, the loss extended a challenging start to the season, dropping the Blue Eagles to 0-3. Ana Hermosura led the team with eight points while anchoring the floor defense with 10 digs and three receptions, while Donna de Leon contributed 10 points in the effort. Despite flashes of resistance, Ateneo could not sustain momentum once UST settled into its game.
As UAAP Season 88 continues to unfold, the sweep may serve as a defining moment for the Golden Tigresses — a reminder of their potential and a platform to build consistency moving forward. For Ateneo, the search for answers continues, with lessons to be drawn as the season’s early tests grow tougher.
