
The U.S. figure skating community is in deep mourning after the tragic crash of an American Airlines regional passenger plane on Thursday, January 30, near Reagan Washington National Airport.
Among the 64 passengers and crew members on board were some of America’s most promising young skaters, coaches, and their families.
The flight, en route from Wichita, Kansas, to Washington, D.C., collided mid-air with a U.S. Army helicopter on Wednesday, January 29. Authorities have reported that there are no survivors of the crash.
The passengers on board had just concluded their participation in the National Development Camp held alongside the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Kansas, returning home with high hopes for the future.
The U.S. Figure Skating governing body expressed its heartbreak in a statement, sharing their sorrow for the loss. “We are devastated by this unspeakable tragedy and hold the victims’ families closely in our hearts,” they said.
Among those confirmed dead are Olympic skating hopefuls Jinna Han and Spencer Lane, as well as coaches Vadim Naumov and Yevgenia Shishkova. Naumov and Shishkova were celebrated for their achievements in pairs skating, having won the 1994 World Championships.
This heart-wrenching loss has left the skating world in shock, with countless tributes pouring in for the victims whose dreams were tragically cut short. The impact of this tragedy will be felt across the entire sport, as these athletes and mentors represented the future of figure skating in the U.S.
