The United States Embassy advised its citizens in the Philippines to stay away from the areas where the Nov. 30 Trillion Peso March protests will take place. The demonstrations aim to call out massive corruption in public infrastructure projects involving lawmakers, contractors, and officials from the Public Works department.
The next wave of protests will happen on Sunday at two major sites: the EDSA People Power Monument in Quezon City and Luneta Park in Manila, which is close to the embassy grounds.
The embassy said that even peaceful gatherings can turn violent without warning and urged Americans to be cautious when near large crowds. It also reminded foreign nationals that joining political protests may violate their immigration status.
A previous protest on Sept. 21 saw a riot in Mendiola that left one person dead, though organizers of the Trillion Peso March denied involvement.
The Bureau of Immigration has long enforced rules barring foreigners from taking part in political activities. Several foreign nationals have been deported in past years for joining rallies, including incidents in 2013 and 2018.
