Typhoon Tino affects over 1M in Western Visayas

Typhoon Tino (Kalmaegi) has impacted 323,744 families or more than 1.04 million people in Western Visayas, leaving six dead, the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC) reported Tuesday.

As of Monday night, only 115 evacuation centers still hosted 384 people, while 35 families (136 individuals) stayed with relatives or friends.

“I’m happy to note that we have a large number of preemptively evacuated families, reaching 43,373, which means we have lessened the potential of having casualties. Our casualties were isolated cases,” RDRRMC chair Raul Fernandez said. He added, “Those who died unnecessarily exposed themselves to risks.” Deaths were recorded in Capiz (3), Antique (1), Guimaras (1), and Iloilo (1).

The typhoon damaged 20,888 houses, with 529 totally destroyed and 20,359 partially damaged. Damage by province included Iloilo: 7,463; Guimaras: 4,985; Antique: 4,627; Aklan: 2,997; Capiz: 816. Fernandez said LGUs have requested housing aid, which has been forwarded to the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development.

Infrastructure losses in Antique, Iloilo, Guimaras, and Aklan reached PHP56.21 million, with 15 roads and bridges damaged, including the old Oyungan bridge in Miagao and the Tiolas road slip in San Joaquin, Iloilo.

Agricultural production losses totaled over PHP46.53 million, with Iloilo: 21.94M; Guimaras: 10.31M; Antique: 7.04M; Aklan: 4.13M; Capiz: 3.1M. Fernandez noted that preemptive evacuations prevented large-scale rescue operations, as most families at risk were already in temporary shelters.
