Türkiye reiterated its support for peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia during talks on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Heads of State Summit in Bishkek on Tuesday.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev as regional leaders gathered in the Kyrgyz capital to discuss cooperation and geopolitical developments.
Türkiye’s Communications Directorate said the talks covered efforts toward peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia, as well as bilateral relations and regional and global issues.
Erdogan said Ankara would continue contributing to efforts to secure peace between the two South Caucasus neighbors.
He said an agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia would “breathe new life into the region.”
The two leaders also discussed cooperation in energy, infrastructure and transportation, sectors Erdogan said have become increasingly important amid developments in the region.
Erdogan called for further expansion of ties between Türkiye and Azerbaijan, saying closer cooperation would benefit both countries.
The Turkish president also invited Aliyev to attend the COP31 climate summit, which is set to be held in Antalya, Türkiye.
The meeting came as Türkiye continues to position itself as a supporter of efforts to ease tensions between Azerbaijan and Armenia while strengthening economic and strategic ties with Baku. (Anadolu)
