US President Donald Trump appointed Adam Telle as acting secretary of the Army on Thursday after Dan Driscoll stepped down amid reported tensions with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
Telle had been serving as assistant secretary of the Army for civil works before being elevated to the service’s top civilian post. Trump said the appointment took effect immediately.
The leadership change followed Driscoll’s resignation on Tuesday. Reports linked his departure to months of disagreements with Hegseth over the Army’s future direction and decisions involving senior officers.
Driscoll had served as Army secretary during a period when the Trump administration sought to place greater emphasis on military readiness and combat capabilities.
The White House credited Driscoll with advancing the administration’s defense priorities and overseeing the Army during major military operations.
Officials also highlighted his involvement in US efforts related to negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, along with initiatives aimed at strengthening the Army’s operational readiness.
Telle now assumes responsibility for the Army as its civilian leadership navigates ongoing changes in personnel and defense priorities under the Trump administration.
Trump did not announce a permanent nominee for Army secretary in his statement, leaving Telle to oversee the service in an acting capacity.
