US President Donald Trump said Thursday he advised Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu not to target Iran’s oil and gas infrastructure.

Trump told reporters that he had directly communicated with Netanyahu, urging him to avoid attacks on Iranian energy sites, and that Israel has so far followed his advice.

He added that while the two leaders coordinate on security matters, Israel sometimes acts independently, but he monitors and intervenes when necessary.

The remarks came after Israel struck Iran’s South Pars natural gas field, the country’s largest gas reserve and a critical component of its economy.

Iran responded strongly, warning it would take retaliatory action without restraint if its infrastructure is attacked again.

The country also launched strikes on energy facilities in neighboring states, including Qatar and Kuwait, in response to the Israeli operation.

The escalation has unsettled global markets, pushing oil and natural gas prices higher amid concerns over supply disruptions.
