US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he seeks a diplomatic resolution with Iran but will prevent the country from developing nuclear arms under any circumstances.
During his 2026 State of the Union address to Congress, Trump highlighted ongoing negotiations with Tehran.
He said the United States has not yet received a clear pledge from Iran to abandon nuclear weapons.
Trump stressed that while diplomacy is his preferred path, he will not allow the world’s top state sponsor of terrorism to acquire nuclear capabilities.
He also claimed that Iran is advancing long-range missile programs that could reach the United States and noted existing threats to Europe and American military facilities abroad.
A third round of indirect nuclear talks between Iran and the US is set to take place in Geneva, Switzerland on Thursday under Omani mediation.
Earlier Tuesday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio briefed lawmakers in a closed-door session as the administration weighed potential military responses.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran will return to negotiations in Geneva determined to secure a fair and timely agreement.
