Trough of cyclone outside PAR to bring rains over Visayas, Mindanao

MANILA – The trough of Typhoon Choi-Wan will bring cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms over parts of the Visayas and Mindanao on Sunday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.

In its 4 a.m. weather forecast, PAGASA said the trough of Choi-Wan will affect Mindanao, Western Visayas, Negros Island Region, Central Visayas, and Southern Leyte.

These areas may experience moderate to at times heavy rains, which could trigger flash floods or landslides, particularly in vulnerable areas.

As of 3 a.m., Choi-Wan was outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), located 2,595 kilometers east of extreme Northern Luzon.

The typhoon was packing maximum sustained winds of 155 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 190 kph. It was moving north-northeastward at 15 kph.

Meanwhile, Metro Manila and the rest of the country will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms due to localized thunderstorms.

PAGASA warned that severe thunderstorms may also trigger flash floods or landslides.

Light to moderate winds are expected over Luzon and the Visayas, generally coming from the northeast to northwest, with coastal waters ranging from slight to moderate, or 0.6 to 1.2 meters.

Mindanao will also experience light to moderate winds from the west to southwest, with coastal waters expected to be slight to moderate at 0.6 to 1.2 meters.
