Top-seeded Filipina standout Maristella Torrecampo is one win away from completing another golden run in Cambodia.
The 13-year-old pride of Naga City, Camarines Sur outclassed Vietnam’s third seed Binh Nhieh To, 6-3, 7-6 (7-1), on Thursday to punch her ticket to the girls’ singles final of the ITF Asia U14 Development Championships at Morodok Techo National Stadium in Phnom Penh.
Torrecampo showed poise beyond her years, especially in the second set where To threatened to extend the match. After splitting tight baseline exchanges, the young Filipina shifted gears in the tiebreak, racing to a dominant 7-1 finish to seal the victory in straight sets.
The win further underscored her mastery over the Vietnamese bet. Just last week, Torrecampo dismantled To in the Final Four of the tournament’s first leg, 6-0, 6-1 — a statement performance that foreshadowed her continued dominance in the regional circuit.
Now, she stands on the brink of another title.
Standing between Torrecampo and a second consecutive crown is Singapore’s Zixi Wang, who delivered a semifinal upset of her own by defeating fourth seed Linh Nguyen, 6-3, 6-4.
Torrecampo is no stranger to championship moments. In the first leg, she captured the title with a composed 6-3, 7-5 victory over Mongolia’s Aissata Enkhzaya Adama, proving she thrives under pressure.
While Torrecampo continues her singles brilliance, the doubles draw has presented a different storyline.
To and Nguyen regrouped in doubles play to eliminate Torrecampo and fellow Filipina Ella Paglalunan in a hard-fought semifinal, 3-6, 6-2, 10-6. The Vietnamese tandem advanced to the final, where they will face Adama and Khuslen Munkbayar, who survived Bangladesh’s Jannat Howlander and Mastora Afrin in a thrilling 6-3, 5-7, 10-8 battle.
In the boys’ division, Vietnam asserted its depth. Top seed Phu Le overcame Singapore’s Nicholas Park in a rollercoaster 6-0, 5-7, 6-1 semifinal to arrange an all-Vietnamese championship showdown against compatriot Tuan Vu.
Vu, ranked fourth, rallied past second seed Leon Ho of Singapore, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, to complete the finals cast.
Le and Vu also displayed their chemistry in doubles, dispatching Filipino pair Alexi Aldemita and Marcus Go, 6-3, 6-4, to reach the final. They will face Park and Ho, who cruised past Laos’ P. Chanthavong and S. Chansomphou, 6-2, 6-1.
For Philippine tennis, however, the spotlight remains firmly on Torrecampo — a rising star steadily building her résumé on the Asian junior stage. With momentum, confidence, and championship experience on her side, the young Filipina is poised for another defining moment in Phnom Penh.
