The Oro Inodoro Awards is back: Nominate your pick for the Metro’s best public toilet

A modern public restroom featuring multiple stalls, marble walls, and a clean, well-lit environment with sinks and mirrors.

The Reigning Champ. The Muntinlupa City Hall bagged the Grand Winner Award in the 2024 Oro Inodoro Awards for its excellent public restroom.

Everyone has that moment: when nature calls and you’re suddenly faced with a choice that can mean relief or regret. Too often, a clean, safe, and dignified restroom feels like a gamble. But Maynilad’s Oro Inodoro Awards is out to prove that it shouldn’t be luck—it should be a right.

Launched in 2016 as the Golden Kubeta Awards, the Oro Inodoro Awards has grown into a nationwide campaign celebrating the best public restrooms in the Philippines—facilities that are clean, inclusive, and sustainably managed, because Filipinos deserve nothing less.

The campaign also shines a spotlight on the struggles of those with pamamahay or shy bladder syndrome, which affects as many as 16.4% of people. For them, access to a hygienic, thoughtfully designed restroom isn’t just convenience—it’s about health, dignity, and peace of mind.

This 2025, the competition gets even bigger. What used to be three categories—Offices & Schools, Commercial & Retail, and Parks & Terminals—now expands into five: Public Offices & Spaces, Schools & Universities, Restaurants & Cafes, Hotels & Malls, and Gas Stations & Transportation Hubs. The goal? To give more establishments the chance to be recognized as champions of hygiene and inclusivity.

Entries will be judged on three pillars: Aesthetics, Cleanliness, and Wastewater Management. Beyond spotless tiles and sleek designs, Maynilad emphasizes that great restrooms must also conserve water and practice eco-friendly sanitation.

“We want to keep the mission and tradition of the Oro Inodoro Awards alive,” said Marie Antonette De Ocampo, VP and Head of Maynilad’s Corporate Affairs and Communication Division. “We aim to highlight how sanitation facilities like public restrooms can both be a celebration of human dignity and best practices in wastewater management.”

The stakes are high—and rewarding. The Grand Winner will take home P30,000, while each of the four other category winners will receive P10,000. Special recognitions are also up for grabs: Banyo Para Sa Lahat (for the most inclusive restroom) and Banyo ng Bayan (the People’s Choice award via social media votes), each worth P10,000.

Last year’s winners showed just how diverse excellence can be. The Muntinlupa City Hall, Calle Café, and Palacio de Memoria took top honors, while Ayala Malls Cloverleaf earned the Banyo Para Sa Lahat award for its accessibility features. The Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX), meanwhile, won the hearts of the public as the Banyo ng Bayan.

But hurry—nominations close on September 22. Winners will be announced on November 19, perfectly timed with World Toilet Day.

After all, a good restroom isn’t just a comfort stop—it’s a statement that dignity, hygiene, and inclusivity belong to everyone.
