Teodoro wants full package approach to MRF, Marcos vows support for PAF modernization

Defense secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. is pushing for the Multi-Role Fighter (MRF) acquisition program to proceed as a comprehensive defense package, complete with Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft and aerial refueling tankers, to ensure operational readiness of the Philippine Air Force (PAF).

Speaking at a media briefing, Teodoro emphasized that buying fighter jets alone is not enough. To make the MRFs effective, he said the package must include support systems that allow sustained, long-range operations and battlefield coordination. He added that additional capabilities such as AWACS and aerial tankers are essential for effective air defense, especially as satellite surveillance proves insufficient on its own.

Teodoro also underscored the importance of adequate logistics, munitions and spare parts, warning that without comprehensive planning and consistent funding, costly military assets could end up underutilized.

The Departments of Finance and Budget and Management are currently working with the Department of National Defense to ensure sustainable funding for the program.

The country is considering either the Lockheed Martin F-16 Block 70/72 or the Saab JAS-39 Gripen C/D for the ₱61 billion MRF project.

Meanwhile, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., speaking at the 78th anniversary of the Philippine Air Force at Villamor Air Base, reaffirmed his administration’s full commitment to the military’s modernization. He praised the PAF’s crucial role in national security, disaster response, and law enforcement, highlighting its surveillance efforts in the West Philippine Sea and support to internal security and anti-smuggling operations.

Marcos also noted the recent acquisition of six new aircraft, the expansion of flight training programs, and infrastructure upgrades as part of the ongoing modernization. He vowed continued support to enhance the Air Force’s capabilities, assuring personnel of his commitment to their welfare and mission readiness.

“Habang umaasa ang taumbayan sa inyo, kayo naman ay may maaasahan sa administrasyong ito. Bilang inyong Commander-in-Chief, titiyakin kong buo at tapat ang suporta at malasakit ko sa inyong lahat sa Philippine Air Force. As your Commander-in-Chief, I will ensure full and unwavering support for the Philippine Air Force,” Marcos said.
